Sporenburg II, Amsterdam

Homes were designed on three stories within the strict constraints of a low-budget project and an urban plan of narrow streets and narrow, deep building lots. The centre of the block is occupied at ground level by an internal car park which also gives access to the residents storage spaces. Each dwelling has an entrance adjoining the street, at which level there is also a room, an individual storage space and stairs to the living quarters. On the first floor, these quarters are grouped around a patio. The second-floor rooms have an adjacent roof garden. The grid of laminated stanchions and girders contains glazing and masonry with flat detailing. The rhythm produced by the strong linear features of these façades and the recessed sections impart a character to the narrow streets.
