Bastion island, Leeuwarden
The inspiration for Bastioneiland comes from the Frisian landscape itself. On the edge of the village of Marsum, a state (a Frisian manor) and a béguinage lie directly adjacent to the expansive countryside. Together, they form a focal point in the distant landscape — a marker that signals the transition from rural land to village.
In a contemporary interpretation, Bastioneiland also presents a kind of béguinage in the landscape. The béguinage-inspired building is situated on a large island. Although the residences present themselves as a single building, the individual homes remain clearly distinguishable. On the courtyard side, each home has its own entrance. Here, the three stories and pitched roofs are clearly articulated as a series of small houses.
All living rooms, however, are oriented toward the water. The living area and kitchen on the ground floor connect directly to a terrace and private dock. Built in sustainable wood, these homes are shaped like small boats — with their "bows" enhancing the magnificent view over the wide body of water and the open Frisian landscape.
