De Brug Training Centre, Assendelft
The De Brug Training Centre in Assendelft is a school for students with learning difficulties or who have difficulties in functioning socially and emotionally. The students need special education, which is organised into small groups with a clear structure and a lot of supervision. The programme is subdivided into a lower school, a middle group and an upper school. The lower school consists of four mentor classes. In the middle group students are given internal job placements. The students in the upper school are given job placements three days a week outside the school. Practical subjects form an important part of the educational programme and a joint search is made for a job. The building is surrounded by greenery and water, with all the opportunities for students to learn trades and to put what they have learned into practice outside. The site is connected to society by a bridge. The feeling of security is central to the design and is expressed in the characteristic round form. Moreover, this gives the building recognisable and special shape, of which the students can be proud.
