Leidsche Rijn Centrum, Utrecht
The centre of Leidsche Rijn is an adventurous combination of living, working, shopping and going out in the centre of Utrecht. The streets are filled with residential buildings, and large and smaller boulevards. Busy squares full of outdoor cafés and restaurants.
Cities such as Berlin and Barcelona served as inspirations for a large-scale centre infused with a Mediterranean atmosphere. The plinth, lined with start-ups and shops, is made of natural stone. Unique reliefs and finishes characterise the colourful façades in yellow, red and brown.
Architect Jo Coenen developed a masterplan for the area along the A2 motorway in which seven architects, including Dok, were asked to submit designs. The resulting mix of styles and tastes has created a playful street scene, as if the centre had grown over the years. As part of the area traverses the A2, there are distinct height differences.
Living among modern food markets, start-ups and works of art: Leidsche Rijn Centre has all the necessary ingredients to become an exciting contemporary city!
