Marktpleinkerk, Hoofddorp

The expansion of the Marktpleinkerk in Hoofddorp has been completed — marking the beginning of a new chapter in the long history of this church building. Since 1929, generations have gathered here, and now a contemporary, welcoming space has been created that offers even more room for connection, reflection, and community.

Dok architecten designed an extension that does not overshadow the existing church but enhances it. The distinctive wooden trusses — the heart of the church — have been extended to the outside in the new design, creating a visual and symbolic link between past and future.

The new central hall forms the core of the extension and connects a range of supporting functions — from gatherings to youth activities. Thanks to the double truss construction, it is now possible to look all the way up into the peak of the roof.

A key feature of the design is its sustainable character. The new wing is entirely gas-free, equipped with a heat pump, and designed with a strong focus on energy efficiency and responsible material use. Accessibility is also a priority: a platform lift ensures the entire building is usable for everyone.

The Marktpleinkerk has become more than a place of worship. It is now a true house for the community — a space for encounter, meaning, and collaboration. This expansion prepares the church for the questions of tomorrow, without losing touch with its historical roots.
