Shopping centre Lewenborg, Groningen, Groningen
The Lewenborg neighbourhood is situated northeast of the centre of Groningen. It is a typical 1970s residential neighbourhood with schools and a shopping centre, characterised by a twisting infrastructure, car-free areas, home zones and a lot of open space with areas of water. The neighbourhood is currently due for a restructuring, in which the centrally situated Lewenborg shopping centre is also being tackled. The shopping centre consists of a layer of shops with a residential court above. Dok architects has prepared a design for the shops, giving them new elevations on the inner and outer sides and revitalising them to provide new shopping space. In the process, the roof form of the typical 1970s dwellings on the residential decks has been the inspiration for the new shopping centre elevations. The aim is to create clear and transparent elevations using contemporary materials to provide an integrated image of homes and shops. Special attention has been paid to improving the circulation flows, with a light interior, wide passages and skylights. Lewenborg will become the bustling heart of the neighbourhood, where people will feel safe and comfortable and not overwhelmed, and be able to shop and live with pleasure.
