Vivid plinth, Amstelveen
The residential tower De Nachtwacht marks the eastern edge of the city square. The building stands out due to its many bay windows and tall glazed facades. The tower features a multi-storey entrance supported by very tall “legs”—prefabricated concrete supports whose elegant form gives the building a refined appearance. Beneath these supports, two floors accommodate shops and restaurants. In summer, residents sit on the terrace in the evening sun, creating the kind of lively atmosphere a city center aspires to.
The tower’s glass facade rises like a large sheet of ice, extending up into the roofline. As a result, the tower—although not even fifty meters tall—appears slender and graceful, with just two apartments per floor. The tall glass panels facing the square give the apartments a distinctive quality. Projecting forward from the brickwork like bay windows, the glass surfaces widen the view. Combined with the side bay windows, this architecture makes the apartments particularly attractive.
