Zaantoren, Zaanstad

To give a new impetus to the centre of Zaandam and improve the route to the station, Sjoerd Soeters developed the Inverdam master plan. The Saentoren occupies an important position in this. This will be converted by making two storeys of shops as the base, with spacious apartments above that, thus becoming the centre of the shopping area. The design for the façades of the six-storey frontage is inspired by traditional Zaandam houses. A hallmark of these homes are the ‘screen façades’. These façades have special proportionate dimensions and are always richly decorated. Precisely these proportions and decorations have been researched and form the basis of the design for the Saentoren's front screen façade. The façades stand as separate frames in front of the apartments. The traditional Zaandam colour scheme in white and green has been adapted in wood and brick. This has brought a little bit of authenticity back into the centre of Zaandam.
