De Catharina, Zaanstad
A milkmaid carries a yoke over her shoulders to transport milk. The yoke rests on her back, while the small buckets dangle gracefully — a beautiful example of smart carrying technique. That same idea is reflected in the balconies of the Catharina. They are suspended from stays, which in turn are supported by sturdy columns. This unique construction gives the building its own character.
The Catharina houses 103 rental apartments, of which 42 are in the mid-range segment and 61 in the private sector. On the upper floors are spacious, double-height penthouses with stunning views.
Designed by Dok Architects, led by Liesbeth van der Pol, the building is an idiosyncratic addition to the Zaan mosaic in the heart of Zaanstad. The tower, affectionately called the Milkmaid Catharina, is clad in a typically Zaan-style façade. The glossy green, glazed bricks resemble a satin skirt, while the slender silhouette of the milkmaid subtly refers to the rich history of the Zaan region.
The tower is completely gas-free, aligning seamlessly with the sustainability ambitions in housing development. By combining underground thermal energy storage with energy generation via solar panels, traditional Zaan frugality is given a modern, sustainable interpretation.
