Wilhelminawerf, Utrecht

A striking location on the Merwede Canal. Surrounding a new small harbor, you live by the water and share a new neighborhood. Various types of housing, all with views of the water, create a wonderful communal space.

The architecture of the Wilhelminawerf builds upon the area's rich industrial history. The residential buildings are designed in harmony with the adjacent silos and chimneys. Tall brick piers with beautiful relief and deep reveals form the foundation, topped with a light structure of paneling featuring delicate detailing. The height accents and roof shapes give the buildings character and direction.

The urban design preserved all the existing trees along the Merwede Canal, which now have a prominent place in the plan. All rainwater is collected in the harbor, enhancing retention value and biodiversity.

At the center of the Wilhelminawerf is a hospitality pavilion by the harbor, serving as a socially sustainable meeting place for the local community. Wilhelminawerf operates on all levels of scale.
